The Central Government has assured that adequate sugar stocks are available in the country to meet the demand and ensure stable prices. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution is monitoring the entire space as the price is increased to 55 rupees per kilogram. The sugar is diverted for ethanol, and the ministry has said that three-fourths of the ethanol produced in India comes from maize.
The demand for sugar is increased due to weather-related problems, festive season and Ministry has informed the production of sugar as the season is expected to be around 306 lakh tonnes. A limit of 400 tonnes has been imposed on sugar dealers, and bulk consumers are not permitted to hold sugar stocks for more than 15 days. Sugar production will be increased from October to improve availability during the festival.
